OK, so yesterday in part 1, we discussed the first two crucial keys to success in any areas of your life, not just business or copy writing. Those were modeling successful people and gaining control of your time. These next two final keys are mostly relevant to just business for the most part, although I am sure there is a way you can mold the concepts to fit the rest of your life as well if you think on it a bit.
3.Carve out your sweet spot.(Meaning, find your niche!)
Listen, I know that it’s tempting to want to learn new things, and not limit yourself to ‘only one niche’. But if you are a copy writer, you will make your best living by drilling down and finding one or two niches you are passionate about to laser in and focus on. For one thing, you will be able to learn those niches inside and out, and write better copy for them as a result.
Plus, it is easier to build a name for yourself as that copywriter who writes sales letters for fitness guru’s, than as that copy writer who writes sales letters. See what I mean? And I’m not standing on a soap box here either, I am still struggling myself to find that perfect niche that I am happy in. When I do, I will focus in and start targeting only that market. You should be doing the same.
This holds true in ANY business though, not just copy writing. Unless you are a large conglomerate like Walmart, selling anything and everything will not do you any favors. You need to narrow your focus, and find something you are passionate about that can also be profitable for you. Once you do, you will be amazed at the results.
It’s just like with relationship marketing. Better to have 200 quality contacts that already love you and your products and services, than to have 2000 indifferent contacts who could care less who they get your particular product or service from.
When you narrow your focus, and find your sweet spot, the rewards pay off big time, and you are happy on top of that. We are always happiest doing that which we love, and your sweet spot should be something you passionately love doing, that you also happen to make a really good living at.
4.Tooting your own horn is vital. Master self-promotion or fail.
Learning to market and promote yourself effectively is critical to your success in business or copy writing. If you’re not willing to tell the world what you have to offer, you can bet that not many people are going to do it for you.
Out of the 4 keys we have covered, this is probably the easiest, yet most misconstrued of them all. Many people think when just starting out that marketing and promoting their services or business is some huge, expensive ordeal.
That is simply not the case. In fact, self-promotion can be pretty effortless at times if you learn a few key marketing strategies that work like a charm. For instance, learning to position yourself properly to achieve the results you want, and be seen as an ‘expert’ rather than just some schmuck who thinks he knows everything.
And harnessing the power of the Internet and social media to market yourself not only effectively, but for free as well. Learning the art of self-promotion puts you in a position of power with your clients. It allows you to command the fees you feel you deserve, and turn down those clients whom you feel you aren’t a good fit with, or who aren’t willing to meet your fees.
And trust me, there will be plenty of those. But you don’t care about those guys, you only care about the people who are willing to pay you what you’re worth. It’s all about positioning and learning the real art marketing yourself. C’mon, toot your own horn… you’ll like it, I promise! 🙂
How about you? Trouble with finding your niche? Scared to toot your own horn? Tell me and the rest of us all about it, and mayhap we can motivate or inspire you. Drop your thoughts in the comment box below.
